Workshop on Contemporary Calligraphy at the United Nations International School, New Yorkニューヨーク・国連学校UNISでの前衛書道ワークショップ開催

2024年12月、ニューヨークの国連学校にて、中学生と高校生を対象に前衛書道ワークショップを行いました。
世界各国から集まった生徒たちが一堂に会し、日本の文化に触れる特別なひととき。今回ご紹介したのは、伝統的な書道に加え、型にとらわれず自分の感情や個性を自由に表現する「前衛書道」です。

筆と墨になれない生徒たちはまず筆ペンを使用し作品作りに取り掛かりました。生徒たちは、最初は少し緊張気味でしたが、自由に線やかたちを描きはじめると、次第に笑顔が広がり、教室は創造のエネルギーで満ちていきました。後半は、それぞれがオリジナルの年賀状づくりに挑戦。思い思いの筆致や色彩を使い、新しい年への願いや想いを表現しました。
「前衛書道は初めてだったけれど、自分の気持ちを形にするのが楽しかった」「文字がアートになるなんて新鮮！」といった声も聞かれ、私自身もその純粋な感性に心を動かされました。

こうして異なる文化に触れることは、単なる知識の習得にとどまらず、多文化理解を深め、異なる背景を持つ人々が互いを尊重しながら共に生きる“多文化共生”への大きな一歩になります。
私の創作活動の根底には、アートを通じて国や言語の垣根を越え、心と心をつなぎ、多様性の中にある美しさと調和を広げていきたいという願いがあります。それが私の目的であり、最終的な目標です。

今回のワークショップを通して、ほんの少しでもその種を生徒たちの心に植えることができたなら、これ以上の喜びはありません。これからも、アートの力で世界中に温かなつながりを広げていきたいと思います。

Workshop on Contemporary Calligraphy at the United Nations International School, New York

In December 2024, we had the privilege of conducting an avant-garde calligraphy workshop at the United Nations International School in New York, engaging middle and high school students from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

The session introduced students to Japanese calligraphy not only in its traditional form, but also as a contemporary art form—avant-garde calligraphy—that allows for free, personal expression. By moving beyond conventional rules, participants explored how brush and ink can be used to translate emotions, individuality, and imagination directly onto paper.

In the second half of the workshop, each student created an original New Year’s card, incorporating unique strokes, shapes, and colors to convey their hopes and wishes for the year ahead. Many students expressed that the experience was both inspiring and enjoyable, noting how “writing could become a form of art” and how it encouraged them to express their own feelings in new ways.

By engaging with a different cultural tradition, students also deepened their understanding of cultural diversity—an essential step toward fostering mutual respect and smoother coexistence in our increasingly interconnected world. This belief in the power of cultural exchange to promote understanding and harmony lies at the heart of my artistic practice, and remains my ultimate goal.
