Speaking at the “Leadership Lecture” for High School First-Year Students

On June 10, I had the privilege of speaking at the “Leadership Lecture” for first-year students at Ota Girls’ High School in Gunma, Japan.
As a teacher at Gunma Kokusai Academy and an avant-garde calligrapher active internationally, I truly value opportunities like this to connect directly with the younger generation—it is always an inspiring and meaningful experience for me.

In my talk, I reflected on my own journey—one filled with both challenges and setbacks—and shared the importance of finding one’s ikigai (life purpose) and stepping beyond one’s comfort zone. My hope was that each student might take away something that will help them envision their own unique career path and move forward with determination.

In the second half of the session, we engaged in the “Compliment Game,” an interactive activity where students identified and expressed positive qualities in one another. Through this exercise, they experienced firsthand how building human connections and expanding their networks can enrich their lives.

After the lecture, many students came to speak with me individually, asking thoughtful questions about their future and career choices. Their enthusiasm and proactive spirit left me feeling deeply encouraged and optimistic about what lies ahead for them.

If this session planted even a small seed of new possibilities in their hearts, then I could not be happier.

6月10日、群馬県立太田女子高等学校の１年生を対象に、「リーダー講演会」の講師として登壇しました。
ぐんま国際アカデミーで教鞭をとりながら、墨象家として海外でも活動している私にとって、母校に帰り、他校の生徒たちと直接お話しできることは、たいへん貴重で、このような機会を与えてくださった御校の先生方には心から感謝をしています。

講演では、前衛書道についてお話しさせていただいた後、私自身がこれまで挑戦と挫折を繰り返しながら歩んできた半生を振り返り、「いきがいを持つこと」や「コンフォートゾーンを広げること」の大切さをお伝えしました。生徒の皆さんが、自分らしいキャリアを描き、意志を持って未来を切り拓くためのきっかけになればと思いながら、お話ししました。

後半では、新入社員研修などでも使用される「褒め褒めゲーム」を行い、お互いの良いところを見つけて言葉にする体験を通じ、人脈を広げることや人とのつながりを築くことの大切さを感じてもらいました。

講演が終わった後も、進路や将来について真剣に質問をしてくれました。その積極的な姿勢に、大きな可能性と未来への力強さを感じました。

今回の講演を通して、少しでも生徒の皆さんの心の中に、新しい挑戦の種が芽生えてくれていたら、これ以上の喜びはありません。
